Why Do Dark Spots Stay After Acne?

You've finally managed to control your breakouts, but the dark marks are still there. Sound familiar?
For many people with South Asian skin, acne doesn't always end when the pimple disappears. It can leave behind brown or greyish marks that remain visible for weeks or even months.
These marks are common, but understanding why they happen is the first step toward caring for your skin more effectively.
What Causes Dark Spots After Acne?
The dark marks that appear after a breakout are often caused by post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, commonly called PIH.
When your skin becomes inflamed because of acne, irritation, or injury, it can produce additional melanin, the natural pigment responsible for skin colour.
This can leave a darker patch even after the original breakout heals.
PIH is especially noticeable in many medium to deeper skin tones. It is not the same as an indented or raised acne scar.
Why Do Some Marks Take Longer to Fade?
Several factors can affect how long pigmentation remains visible.
1. Repeated Breakouts
If new pimples keep appearing, new marks may develop before older ones have faded.
2. Picking at Pimples
Squeezing or picking acne can increase inflammation and raise the risk of both pigmentation and scarring.
3. Sun Exposure
UV exposure and visible light can contribute to persistent pigmentation, especially in deeper skin tones.
4. Harsh Skincare Products
Over-exfoliation, irritating formulas, and excessive scrubbing can worsen inflammation and make dark spots more noticeable.
Which Skincare Ingredients May Help?
Different ingredients address pigmentation through different mechanisms.
Niacinamide may help improve the appearance of uneven skin tone while supporting the skin barrier.
Vitamin C is an antioxidant commonly used in products intended to improve dullness and uneven-looking pigmentation.
Glycolic acid helps exfoliate the skin's surface and can improve the appearance of certain dark spots over time.
However, using several strong ingredients together may irritate the skin. More exfoliation doesn't necessarily mean faster results.
Why Sunscreen Matters
Sunscreen is one of the most important parts of a routine focused on dark spots.
Even an effective pigmentation treatment may deliver disappointing results if your skin is repeatedly exposed to sunlight without adequate protection.
Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Tinted formulas containing iron oxides may provide additional protection against visible light, which can contribute to pigmentation.
Apply sunscreen generously and reapply as directed, particularly when spending time outdoors.
A Simple Routine for Post-Acne Marks
You don't need a shelf full of brightening products.
Morning: Cleanse gently, moisturize as needed, and apply sunscreen.
Evening: Cleanse, use one suitable targeted treatment, and moisturize.
Introduce active ingredients gradually and follow their recommended application instructions.
If you still have frequent breakouts, addressing the acne itself is equally important. Otherwise, new pigmentation may continue developing.
How Long Will the Marks Take to Fade?
Mild marks may gradually improve over several months. Some take considerably longer, especially when pigment is deeper in the skin.
Be consistent and avoid expecting overnight changes.
If pigmentation persists, spreads, or becomes difficult to manage, consult a dermatologist for an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan.
